Pertinent Information Related To Water Filters

Prior to installing a water filter, enough information, regarding the water that needs filtering, should be collected and pondered upon. Water should be tested for evaluating the level of contamination and harmful chemicals and based on the result, the type of water filter should be chosen. This is paramount for enjoying a healthy and safe supply of water. Without the usage of a water filter, the contaminants will settle in human body and cause adequate damage and harm.

The common waterborne diseases like typhoid and cholera are kept under control with the inclusion of chlorine in water as a water treatment system and the same is supplied for communities. Death rate, prior to chlorination of water, was much higher. Chlorination of water began about 50 years back and since then the death toll on account of contaminated water consumption is minimized. Though chlorination has helped treating contaminated water, there are certain facts proved beyond doubt that such chemical as chlorine and its by products pose significant risk in causing other medical conditions like allergies and respiratory disorders.

Different areas may have different types of water and thus the contaminants in them may also differ largely. Water in some areas may have contaminants that are radioactive in nature. Although not system of water treatment can deal with this contaminant effectively, the contaminant known as Radon is however treatable with the help of carbon-based water filters that filter out this contaminant quite efficiently.

Components like Magnesium and Calcium are totally dissolvable in water. For measuring contamination, the quantities of these components do not have a standard yardstick. Approximate quantities of these substances are found through test and used for analyzing water conductivity. The quality however is not indicated with these tests. Water filters are usually not designed to have the dissolvable substances removed. In fact, certain amount of magnesium and calcium is good for health and water containing such components are less likely to get affected by harmful contaminants.

Often a milky or cloudy look is observed in filtered water. This are usually caused due to the air pockets that get formed in the water filter while the valve is closed and a drain off is executed. If the water is made to settle in a container for few minutes, the cloudy look disappears. To prevent the cartridges of the water filter from forming air pockets, the filter can be turned on its head to allow water to run for few minutes.

It is never a good idea to filter hot water through a water filter as it can cause leakage. Hot water is likely to soften the seals and rubber tubes thus causing leaking, especially in counter-top water filters. Shower water filters are however exception as they are not vulnerable to such damage. Shower water filters are best suited for houses that get water from private wells. Contaminants from these wells are destroyed with the use of shower water filters; otherwise these contaminants can bring about skin allergies through absorption and respiratory disorders through inhalation.

Installation of water filters ensures that all contaminants including the ones (vinly, chloride or lead) that could have been developed as a result of plumbing the house are cleaned before the water is consumed. Shower water filters on the other hand offer clean water not only for drinking but bathing, washing, and cooking. The air in the atmosphere also gets better within the house with the installation of such water filters.

EPA registration is required if a water filter or any such product makes the use of components such as silver or any other contaminants, which are regulated by the Environment Protection Agency (EPA). Silver is an integral component of any carbon-based water filter and hence certification and validation by the state department of health is important and this should be confirmed before acquiring any product. Besides any component that uses food grade material should obtain certification from the Food and Drug Administation (FDA).
